Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy is a minimally-invasive technique used to eliminate twisted, rope-like varicose veins on the legs. Though rarely used as the primary course of treatment for varicose veins and venous reflux disease, it can be combined with other treatment methods such as thermal therapies with radiofrequency (Venefit) or laser treatment (EVLT) for immediate improvement in the look and feel of damaged leg veins. We perform microphlebectomy in the office, and often during the same treatment session when treating with thermal therapy. This is performed in our office using local anesthesia. Our board-certified vascular surgeons make a series of tiny incisions along the length of the target vein. The length of the vein segment to be removed will determine the number of incisions required for adequate removal. These incisions are so tiny, that they generally do not require stitches, but may leave slight, imperceptible scarring at the incision sites where vein segments have been removed.

Patients tolerate microphlebectomy well, and post treatment discomfort is minimal. Non-aspirin pain relievers, like Advil and ibuprofen, can help if needed. Some bruising may occur but goes away quickly. Patients can commence regular activity as with most varicose vein treatments and may be required to wear compression stockings for a brief period following treatment.

If you suffer from leg pain or varicose veins, contact our office today to schedule a consultation. Our vein specialists can help you determine whether this is the right option for you.
